Dina DinaMust-see historical classic of Louis Armstrong singing and playing "Dina Dina". Arts | August 1, 2005 11:14 AM |
Comments:
You can see the entire performance on the Ken Burns Jazz documentary in glorious full NTSC. This performance is credited in the documentary as being the moment when jazz broke free of the old straight ahead kind of performance and became a way of reinterpreting melody and timing. If you enjoyed the clip, go and rent, borrow or buy the Burns documentary for a great beginners guide to jazz.

________________________It's actually entitled "Dinah", one of three songs recorded live in Denmark in 1932 before Armstrong's lip was split. He was arguably at his peak as a trumpet player at this point in his career; once he split his lip, his playing was never as fierce as this.

________________________The song is entitled "Dinah", not "Dina Dina". I have a copy of this film on 16mm in my jazz film collection and did some research on it. If I remember correctly it's from 1932 and was filmed in Denmark along with "I Cover The Waterfront" and one other song. Armstrong's performance on "Dinah" displays all the trademarks of his art--the fluid, lightning-fast improvisation and his fierce attack on the trumpet for starters.
